I’m Ben. I’m a freelance creative copywriter and UX writer, living in London. In the last 10 years I’ve worked on both client and agency sides – helping businesses of all sizes develop their tone of voice, grow their social media channels, explain complex processes, launch entirely new brands, shout about new products and reach out to new audiences.

July 2017-August 2017

I spent four weeks in New York and a final week in London with an international team developing a new product concept and delivery plan for investment firm BlackRock.

April 2017-June 2017

I developed the content for BP’s new app, BPme (coming to the UK soon), helped define a new online service for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and scripted videos for a series of IBM IX pitches.

May 2016-March 2017

I was part of a WAE team working on-site with London’s Met police on a major redesign of their website and digital services. Find out more.

Oct 2015-May 2016
Jul-Aug 2015
May-Sep 2014

I was part of a team working on-site at Lloyds Bank on a large scale service design project. I was also part of a team that developed a concept digital service for HSBC. Both projects, unfortunately are still under wraps. At Sapient I also wrote new page content for a Dettol site redesign, and contributed to emails, display ads and other marketing content for Sky.

Oct 2014-Feb 2015

I came up with creative concepts and copy for various Google, Android and YouTube platforms, helped to develop the branding and tone of voice for new tech company Zedsen, and wrote case studies for the new rehabstudio website.

Apr-May 2015

I helped to develop the visual narrative and copy for a cutting-edge campaign video for GSK’s South American skincare brand, Sunmax. I also wrote copy for Shell display ads and direct marketing pieces.

Virgin Atlantic

Feb 2017

I wrote emails and campaign messaging for Virgin Atlantic and Flying Club, the airline’s rewards programme, and helped with ongoing development of Virgin Atlantic’s brand values.

Feb 2012-2017

I wrote SEO copy and metadata for over 450 products on The Fowndry website, as well as category headers and homepage content. I also used to chip in with branding and marketing advice from time to time.

Senior creative (copy): Apr 2013-May 2014
Mid-weight copywriter: Mar 2012-Apr 2013

I worked closely with STEEL’s major clients, from first brief to final delivery – generating ideas and developing them with the team into (occasionally award-winning) digital campaigns. Budgets ranged from £2k to £200k, with campaigns always based around measurable business objectives and key customer behaviours.

As STEEL’s lead copywriter I wrote daily content for Debenhams and TalkTalk emails, plus regular copy for other clients’ newsletters, social media channels and campaign sites. I also advised on tone of voice and worked on branding campaigns for iStock by Getty, SmartDog and STEEL itself.

In two years the team increased Greggs Facebook fans from 300,000 to 750,000 and took their Twitter followers from 13,000 to 83,000. I led the team producing Greggs social media content and advised STEEL’s other clients on using social channels. STEEL won a 2013 Digital Impact Award for a Greggs Facebook campaign, The Great Greggs Sandwich Maker.

I regularly pitched new strategic opportunities and campaigns to STEEL’s major clients. I was also part of STEEL’s new business pitching team – winning contracts from iStock by Getty, Brothers Drinks and SmartDog Ltd.

Copywriter: 2010-2012
Product development executive: 2009-2010
Customer services agent: 2008-2009

As senior copywriter, I produced sales copy and taglines for most of the site’s new products – of the 1800 new items added in 2011, 1500 were written by me. I also wrote the weekly newsletters, product category headers and homepage features, managed two freelance copywriters and trained two others.

I planned and wrote content for Firebox’s Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr and Pinterest accounts and responded to customer comments.

As well as proofing and editing press releases I took part in several press and public events – including exhibiting at the Gadget Show Live and launching Firebox’s first commercial product, Putty Monsters.
